Bruchac, J. (1999) The Trail of Tears. New
York, NY: Random House.
This book tells the story of John
Ross, the chief of the Cherokee Nation and his tribe’s journey to Oklahoma. The
Cherokee people were forced to leave their homeland and travel 1,200 miles in
harsh conditions. This book contains beautiful and useful illustrations that
help readers really picture how the Native American removal went down. This is
a non-fiction story, so this book can be utilized as a tool to teach about the
Trail of Tears and the removal act. This book is appropriate for grades 1
through 5.
